This past weekend the Wolfhounds took two sides to St. Louis to face the St. Louis Bombers. After weeks of cold windy rugby, the Hounds arrived to 85 degree weather and a rain soaked pitch. The DI side took to the pitch first and from the opening kickoff the Wolfhounds showed they came to play. Avoiding the typical slow first 5 or 10 minutes, the Hounds put 3 quick tries on the board. Strong defense and tactical kicking kept the Wolfhounds in the driver’s seat for the first half.
The Wolfhounds came back firing on all cylinders again at the start of the second half. Despite the wind in their face, the Hounds stuck to their game plan and kept attacking. Sparked by a couple of tries by Shaun Grobler coming off the bench, the Hounds never shut down. At the final whistle, the Wolfhounds came away with a hard fought 39-0 shutout.
The DIII side then took to the pitch against the Bomber’s second side, the Hornets. The Hornets came out strong, putting a try up early, and eventually taking a 10-0 lead before a determined Nate Kosman scored under the posts on a punishing run. After converting the try, the Hounds were still down 3. Each team had several opportunities to score but never seemed able to finish it. That was until Joe Hood, having moved to 8 took off on a pick and passed it to a visiting Wame for a try, giving the Hounds a 12-10 lead with 8 minutes left. The Hornets kept up the pressure for the final minutes but the Wolfhound defense held strong and would not be denied a victory.
This was a good weekend and a good building block going into the April 30th playoff match. Moving forward, this is another huge week, as the Wolfhounds will welcome long time in state rivals Scioto Valley to Brimelow Fields for 2 matches. First match starts at 1pm. Come out and support the Wolfhounds.
