The Fall 2011 season has come to an end and there has already been a lot in the work in preparation for the off season and upcoming spring season. Below are some dates to remember and plan ahead for.

Off season training at DI- Sessions will start December 6 with sessions at 6am and 6pm (tentatively). The DI training facility is located in the Beacon Sports Medicine building off of Kemper Rd. Click HERE for info on DI and see John McCafferty for more information if you are interested but have not signed up.

Winter Banquet – Saturday, January 28, 2012 at Mt. Adams Pavilion. More information will be coming out soon regarding this. Always a great night.

First Practice – Saturday, February 4, 2012. Hopefully but most likely not a Brimelow. More information will be out as we get closer….but remember the day.

Ft. Lauderdale Ruggerfest – February 24, 25, 26 2012. It was decided this year that the club goes to Ft. Lauderdale instead of Savannah. The competition level in Ft. Lauderdale will better prepare us for what is going to be a tough spring. The hope is that we have the commitment to enter teams in the Premier, Club, and Old Boys side. Please email Tony Schenke and let him know if you are able to go, would like to go, etc. so we can start planning travel and hotels.

Midwest Playoffs – Saturday, April 7, 2012. These will either be in Cincinnati or Detroit. We will update this as soon as we know for sure.

Crossover Match – Saturday April 28, 2012. Crossover game with the South for a spot in the USA Rugby National Championships.

Sweet 16 – Saturday May, 12, 2012

Final Four, Saturday, June 2, 2012

And don’t forget most Saturdays there will be the Cincinnati Winter Touch Rugby World Cup Championship Series. Check your emails for location. And there’s always Saturday nights at Tap N’ Go. Cheers.

On Saturday October 29th, the Wolfhounds DI welcomed the Indianapolis Impalas to Brimelow Fields to wrap up the fall 2011 season and finish the day and season with a 53-21 win.

On Saturday October 29th, the Wolfhounds DI welcomed the Indianapolis Impalas to Brimelow Fields to wrap up the fall 2011 season. The Hounds started the scoring off in the 5th minute with a penalty kick from 30M by fullback Ryan Frentzel. Ten minutes later, it was Frentzel converting his own try from the 15M mark on the left of the pitch. Ryan Grote followed up that score with his first of 3 on the day, a performance that would earn him Player of the Week honors on rugbymag.com (article). With a 15-0 lead, the Hounds got caught sleeping at a ruck minutes later, 10M from the Indy try line. The mistake saw an Indy wing come up with the ball and race 90M for a converted try. Going into the half with a 15-7 lead, the Wolfhounds were disappointed in the first half execution.

Coming out of halftime, it seemed to be a new Wolfhound team taking the pitch, with flyhalf Shaun Grobler getting the scoring underway a little over a minute in with a converted try. Minutes later, Ryan Grote was able to get in for his second try of the day. After giving up a try to the Indy scrumhalf, in the play of the day to that point, the ball crossed the field from Jordan Kleinhenz to Ferd Schneider to John McCafferty who gave a quick waggle before passing to Tony Schenke on the wing for the converted try. Fresh onto the pitch, Paul Rettig touched down ten minutes later after a series of quick pick and gos. The conversion put the score at 41-14. It was shortly after..in the real play of the day, that Ryan Grote ran down the sideline and scored his third try of the day. The Hounds gave up another converted try before Piet Swanepol, not to be left out of the scoring, muscled his way in for a try, this time converted by scrumhalf Jason Kleinhenz. At the final whistle, the Hounds were victorious 53-21.

The win sees the Wolfhounds finish first in the Midwest East Conference for the second year in a row. With the Midwest’s decision to move the playoffs to the spring (April 7th and 8th or 14th and 15th in Cincinnati or Detroit), the Hounds will have a lot of time to prepare for Palmer, who finished first in the Midwest West Conference.

The Wolfhounds DI side traveled to Detroit on the 22nd of October in what is always a tough physical match with the Detroit Tradesmen. The Hounds were able to get on the board early with a penalty kick from fullback Ryan “Pony” Frentzel and a try from 8 man Piet Swanepol. However a series of penalties, turnovers, and poor tackling put Detroit in the driver’s seat for most of the first half. Just before the half, the Hounds put together their best play of the day as Jordan Kleinhenz fought through the Detroit defense before the ball eventually ended up in Ryan Grote’s hands, touching down between the posts for a converted try. Going into halftime down by 3 after playing as poorly as we did, the Hounds felt confident. But as all too often has happened this season, 2 second half yellow cards proved to be the nail in the coffin for the Hounds. Down but not out, the Hounds stayed in the game with another penalty kick and a late converted try by flanker Joey Hood. Driving with the ball with no time left, a costly penalty turned the ball over with Detroit kicking to touch for full time. Detroit 32, Wolfhounds 25. The 7 point loss gets a bonus point, always tough to come upon on the road, but it was a disappointing day nonetheless.

DIII starts off strong with 24-10 win.

The Wolfhounds D-3 Side began league play on Saturday immediately after the conclusion of
the D-1 match. Their opponent, Lexington Blackstones, had just dropped down from D-2 and
figured to be a strong challenge. Both teams featured big, heavy packs. The pitch was soggy
from a week of solid rain and so the style of play fit the conditions well.

The Wolfhounds opened scoring early with Luke Pinkston converting his own try at the five
minute mark. A mishandled kick-off gave Lexington an opportunity to quickly respond. They did
so with an unconverted try of their own. At thirty-two minutes the Cincinnati pack drove over the
line and Rick Sodeman touched it down. Pinkston converted the try. Just before the half, big
Jeremy Anderson powered in for another try. The half ended with the score at 19-5, in favor of
Cincinnati.

In the second half, game fitness seemed to give Cincinnati the edge. At 56 minutes, Brandon
Wolfe made amends for an early knock-on in the try zone and scored an unconverted try. Fierce
Wolfhound defense kept the visitors at bay until the 70 minute mark when Lexington scored an
unconverted try. The game ended with the score of CRFC 24, Lexington 10.

On Labor Day weekend, the Wolfhounds traveled strong to Indianapolis for a D-1 League Match
and a full B-Side. Thirty-seven players kitted up for the Hounds, bringing home two victories.
The all-important D-1 League victory established CRFC as the League leader early on in the
season. While the second side demonstrated great composure on a scorching hot afternoon to
win in the final moments of the match.

The D-1 match saw the Hounds coming out quickly to pressure the Impalas. The first 30
minutes of the match were played entirely within the home team’s territory. Yet despite such
strong field position dominance, Cincinnati could only muster 6 points of two penalty kicks
from Ryan “Pony” Frentzel. Turnovers and penalties for both sides marred the first half, killing
multiple scoring opportunities for the Wolfhounds. The half ended 6-0.

In the second half the Impalas seized the momentum off of the kick-off. At eight minutes they
scored of a quick tap penalty for an unconverted try. Their momentum was short lived, however,
as Johnny Warner gathered up loose ball from the kick-off deep in Indy territory. Within minutes
Kyle Merk powered over for a try. The conversion was narrowly off the mark.

The rest of the second half resembled the first half in terms of field position dominance. This
half, however, scoring opportunities were converted rather than lost in turnovers. The Hounds
scored again very quickly with Meki Betomakita chasing a corner kick down for a try. The
conversion from the touchline was off center. At 25 minutes Shaun Grobler slotted a penalty
kick to extend the lead to 19-5.

Indy did not let the game get too far out of hand. They answered with an unconverted try to
bring the score to 19-12. Shaun Grobler responded with a beautiful drop goal at 30 minutes and
a penalty kick shortly afterwards to put the game away. With almost no time on the clock, Indy
converted a try to make the final score 25-19.

The second match opened with the host team immediately punching in an unconverted try.
The Hounds regrouped and began to stiffen up on defense. Heavy hitting on a scorching hot
afternoon played on a rock-hard field led to many injury minutes. The match ground on with little
advantage gained by either side. Luke Pinkston finally put some points on the board for CRFC
with a penalty kick late in the half.

In the second half the Wolfhounds worked in all the substitutions available to assure that
everyone got playing time. Yet, the pace did not slacken. Midway through the half, Luke
Pinkston slipped through for a try. The conversion was off. Indy responded with a converted try
with only minutes remaining. Ben Cardinal capped the play of the day when a Impala turnover
was kicked ahead and he dribbled the while outracing everyone to dot a try .Luke Pinkston
converted to take the score to the final of CRFC 15, Indy B-side 12.

The Division 3 Side began the 2011 Season with a friendly match against Xavier University.

The Division 3 Side began the 2011 Season with a friendly match against Xavier University.
The Boys from XU were fresh off an intense summer camp at which many of the Hounds
participated and coached. There was great anticipation on the sideline to see how far along both
sides were at this early point in the season. Neither side disappointed the fans or coaches as
the match was a close see-saw affair until late in the second half.

From the start, it was evident that the heavier pack of the Wolfhounds was going to be a
challenge for XU. An early Wolfhound converted try was set up by strong scrumaging and
rucking with newcomer Kendric “Dingo” Roberts powering into the try zone. However, XU
quickly answered with long, open field running with their own forwards to put in a try and cut the
lead. After a strong run from Patrick Grote, the Hounds finished the half up 12-5.

The second half was wide open, with free substitutions to get everyone playing time. Both
coaching staffs took the opportunity to look at various line-ups and to evaluate newcomers.
After a brief period of time with the lead, XU finally succumbed to the pressure applied by the
Wolfhound pack and back row. After long gashing runs from Dingo off the back of scrums, and
strong counterattacks from the Wolfhounds back three, the scores began to mount. Patrick
Grote dotted again, with Ben Cardinal, Rick Sodeman, and Jessie Kleinhenz adding trys of their
own. Luke Pinkston converted 4 of 6 trys. The final score was CRFC 38, XU 20.

On Saturday August 27th, the Wolfhounds welcomed the Buffalo Rugby Club to Brimelow Fields to kick off the 2011 fall season.

On Saturday August 27th, the Wolfhounds welcomed the Buffalo Rugby Club to Brimelow Fields to kick off the 2011 fall season. Eager to pick back up after a disappointing finish the spring playoffs, the Hounds came out strong and aggressive, with a bit of a chip on their shoulders. After a couple of missed opportunies early on, Ryan “Pony” Frentzel got the scoring off with a penalty kick from 22M with Lemeki Betomakita touching down for a converted try minutes later. A few minutes after that, an alert Jason Kleinhenz saw an overload that put Ryan Grote in for his first try of the day. With the conversion, the score went to 17-0, before Lemeki Betomakita made a great second effort down the left sideline and barely crossed the line for his second try of the day. The pace of the game seemed to slow after the first 30 and a few mental errors gave Buffalo their first chance at points with about 5 minutes left in the half. A penalty kick right in front of the posts put the halftime score at 24-3.

Unhappy with some sloppy play and feeling fortunate to be up 21, the Hounds came out in the second with a renewed intensity. The Wolfhounds went on the attack early, with the forwards taking several crashes on the try line before flyhalf Ryan Frentzel took things into his own hands and took a quick pick for another 5. A few minutes later, Richie Columbus added another 5, while 8-man Piet Swanepol, refusing to be left out of the fun, added another shortly after. With time running out, Ryan Grote added his second of the day with Shaun Grobler converting, taking the score to 46-3 as the final whistle sounded.

This summer saw a huge number of participants in our 7s program. Perhaps the
announcement that the 2016 Olympics will feature a Rugby 7’s Tournament was the impetus for the
large turnout all summer, as we averaged over 30 players at every practice this summer. Or perhaps
everyone just wanted to stay in shape, work on skills, and have a LOT of fun. Regardless, we had payers
from local high schools, colleges, and other area men’s clubs turnout to play 7s all summer. It is a great
way to prepare everyone for the upcoming Fall Season!
